1. Start by putting the large items in the unit first and then fill the gaps of space. This will allow you will use the storage space more efficiently. You can also safely stack boxes as high as you can starting from the back of the storage unit wall and working your way towards the door. Utilizing all of the storage space effectively will help you save money for the size of the storage unit that you will need.

2. Make sure to leave any boxes or items that you think you’ll need more frequently until the very last so you will have easier access to the items.  If you think you may need to access your space more often, you may want to consider leaving a walkway through the center of your unit so you can easily find whatever you need.

Self Storage Storing Tips

StorPlace has self storage for all the seasons

Renting a storage unit and packing away your belongings can be a daunting task. Once you have packed the items that you want to store, follow the storage unit packing tips below to get more space out your storage unit.

  • Plan the layout before storing anything. If possible, leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit so you won’t have to move around as much when you need access. Put items in the front of the storage unit that you will need to frequently access. The back of the storage unit should be reserved for the least needed stuff. Make a diagram of where things are stored and tape it to the front wall; it will help you find what you are looking for.
  • Keep an inventory of your unit’s contents. Take digital photos and make a list of items before storing  or packing them,so you can remember what you have stored.
  • If you are storing items in cardboard boxes, tape the bottoms securely. Do not just fold the flaps on the bottom or the top of the boxes on themselves. Fill the boxes to the top, (use packing paper, if needed), before taping closed. Boxes that are not full can collapse when another box is placed on top of them. Stack the heaviest and largest boxes on the bottom with lighter boxes on top. Similar sized boxes will be easier to stack and are more stable.
  • Label all of the boxes. If a stored item is not identifiable by sight, indicated the room and description of the contents of the box on the outside. This should be written on all four sides of the box, so you can quickly identify the contents. If you put a label on the top of the box, the list can’t be seen if something is stacked on the box.
  • Maximize the vertical space in your unit. Sofas and mattresses can be stored vertically, so their footprint is smaller. Consider purchasing free-standing shelving units to stack boxes and other items within the storage unit. Select shelving units  that are deep enough for your needs. Also, choose storage units that are strong and are a good value, because no one will really see them.
  • Fill all empty spaces in other stored items such as appliances, dressers and shelving units. Place things inside of drawers and cabinets, such as cushions, clothing, stuffed animals, lamp shades and linens. Put boxes under and on the top of chairs and tables.
  • Disassemble large items like beds and remove legs from tables to save on space. Place any screws or hardware in a plastic bag and tape securely to the furniture.
  • Safeguard your items from damage and breakage. Place blankets between or around furniture to prevent scratches. Do not store mirrors or art lying flat, store them vertically within a special sized box or with protective packing material.
  • To protect your belongings from damage in humid conditions, leave some space between your stacks of boxes and the walls so air can circulate. Placing pallets on the floor will allow air to flow underneath and prevent the build-up of condensation. Rub a small amount of oil on anything metal like tools and bikes to help prevent rust. Use an old sheet to cover stored furniture or individual items to protect them from dust.
  • Check with your particular storage operator regarding what items that can not be stored in storage units.Under no circumstances should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit. Also, do not keep live plants or animals in a storage unit.

Summertime Storage Blues

Summer

Guys, if you are anything like my husband you already have the Summertime Storage Blues. Has she been on you as much as I have been on my husband to finish his HONEY DO LIST? Girls: talking, whining, bribing, and threatening will do no good. Now it’s time for a not so gentle nudge.  The first thing you need to do is to RENT A STORAGE SPACE for all of the extra things you want to get out of the house or garage.
Summer is a great time to complete those spring cleaning projects that didn’t get completed such as moving the items that you cleared out of rooms to a storage unit.

Summer brings different challenges when you are renting a storage unit. It is also the busiest season for storage facilities and moving companies!  Face it, summer is hot and sticky–not exactly the best time of year to cram your things into a small space! Fortunately, there are many ways to keep your belongings cool and dry while you store them in the sweaty summer months. Below are just a  few tips to keep in mind when you are storing this summer.

•Use a heated and cooled unit. If you will be storing clothing (especially leather or fur), wood furniture, photographs, or electronics, your safest option is to rent a heated and cooled unit. Extreme heat and high humidity that is typical of the summer months can cause mildew, mold, rust and decay. Heated and cooled storage will maintain a steady temperature between 60 and 80 degrees in the storage unit protecting your belongings.

•Make sure that everything is clean and dry before storing it. Storing damp items will contribute to the moisture in the air and cause damage to your belongings. Make sure all clothing is washed (and thoroughly dry) before storing as well. Dirt, oils, perfumes or stains on unclean clothing will attract pest infestations, especially in high temperatures.

•Make sure everything is adequately packed. Make sure all furniture and mattresses are wrapped and covered with furniture blankets, then covered with a plastic sheet to keep out moisture. Never place plastic directly against furniture as this can cause moisture build-up on the mattress. Clothing and furs should be cleaned before going into storage and hung inside wardrobe boxes. You should also place your possessions on top of wooden pallets if your unit has a concrete floor. This will keep them away from condensation.
