You never know what type of weather we might get in Tennessee! It might not be something that you think about, but business, especially a self storage facility has to be diligent and prepare the property for any type of weather from extreme cold, ice and heavy rain. This might be the best time to discuss how to StorPlace Self Storage employees properly prepare the storage facility for inclement weather.
First, let’s discuss salting the storage property. Many facilities are located on a steep hill and the last thing anyone needs is for a vehicle or large truck to be sliding down the hills and possibly injuring someone or damaging a building on the property. The problem with the weather in Tennessee is that most of the time when the National Weather Service is calling for wintry weather it usually starts with heavy rain. This can be a problem when it comes to laying down salt. The salt will not do any good if it is laid down in the rain and just dissolves. Let’s take that a little further, if the only option is to lay the salt in the rain, then by all means do it. It is better to have some salt out than none at all. Also, keep in mind that regular rock salt does damage to asphalt and metal so you may want to use Calcium Magnesium Acetate. It seems to work a little better at lower temps and does not do as much damage to the asphalt. Most storage facilities also have metal roofs and when the temperature rises and the sun shines on the roofs, it will melt the ice and snow so don’t forget to salt around the down spouts. The temp on the roof may be high enough to melt the snow and ice, but the ground may still be below freezing and the runoff water may refreeze after it leaves the downspout. The number one location to place a heavy amount of salt or ice melt is around your gate as this is where people have to hit the brakes to stop to enter their gate access code. The last thing a customer or the property manager needs is a car to slide into the gate. That will shut the property down and cost a large amount of money to fix. Also, salt any walkways or sidewalks on the property. The sidewalks are usually raised and will freeze first before the asphalt.
Speaking of gates, don’t forget the chain. The chain on the gate is supposed to hang loose just a little bit. A problem can develop when the water rolls down to the lowest hanging spot on the chain and freezes. As the chain goes through the gears in the gate motor, the ice can cause the chain to snap and could also lock up the gears. This can cause the gate to get stuck open and that could open the property up for all types of problems. The best solution for this is White Lithium Grease as it has a very low freezing temp. However, White Lithium Grease is not ideal for gate chains so after the threat of winter weather has passed use some WD-40 to remove the White Lithium Grease and replace the grease on the chain and gears with a good chain lube.
Another good product to have on hand is a bottle of de-icer. This will work to unfreeze customer locks and other locks on the property that may have frozen during the bad weather. It will also work for the gate chain to get the ice off but will not work as a preventative.

StorPlace Self Storage wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
If you gauge the season by the weather, it would be hard to believe that it is Christmastime. The temperatue at the time of writing this post on this early December morning is fifty-seven degrees. Okay, so the forecast calls for a cold front later this week. But for now, it seems like spring at StorPlace Self Storage of Bowling Green. Ironically, we have decorated the office and storefront a little earlier this year. The highest tenant traffic is normally around the first of the month when folks drop by to pay their storage rent. It is nice when a tenant can actually see the decorations we put up.
A tenant stopped in to pay that got us to thinking “internationally.” He was humming a Christmas carol and knew quite a bit about its history. He said that the Coventry Carol is one of the most recognizable and haunting pieces of music of the season. The carol dates from sixteenth-century England and is about King Herod and Bethlehem from the Gospel of Matthew. It is the tenant’s favorite Christmas carol. That’s why he knows so much about it. The carol was a perfect reminder that this time of year is not just about shopping and that Christmas is not an American invention. Of course, we knew that, but it is a good reminder. Best of all, the tenant liked our office Christmas decorations, which was the whole point of decking the halls.
Not too long after that visit, we received a call from a tenant who was checking on his storage account balance. He thought he had already paid December, but was mistaken. He said he would arrange for the payment but could not bring it in himself because he was in Saudi Arabia. This got us to thinking about many of the tenants we have that are currently out of the country: one lives in Toronto, another is stationed at a U.S. embassy in the Middle East and a few more are in the military or at universities overseas. While they can’t take their things with them, the belongings remain safe at StorPlace Self Storage of Bowling Green.
Yesterday, our store’s Operations Manager visited us from Nashville. While running an errand she came back with supplies and a few additional Christmas decorations. She noted that the candy canes were a product of Mexico, the string lights from the Philippines, and the window gels from China. StorPlace Self Storage is even more international than we realized! Come to think of it, StorPlace Self Storage’s staff Christmas dinner is held at an Italian restaurant. Wow!
Merry Christmas to you, Feliz Navidad, or whatever language you happen to speak!
The holiday season comes and goes very quickly, but your holiday stuff will always be around. Each holiday season you collect more things. Whether it is more decorations or extra presents, you will need some extra space to put those things. StorPlace Self Storage has a few holiday storage solutions for you!
StorPlace Self Storage carries a wide variety of packing supplies from boxes to packing peanuts. You may need different sized boxes. There are at least four sizes of boxes: small, medium, large, and extra-large. This variety allows the customer to choose the boxes that would best accommodate their extra stuff.
The next choice for storage for the holidays could be renting a storage unit. The amount of holiday stuff (larger outside decorations, trees, ornaments, lighting, etc.) you have will determine the size of the storage unit you will need. The most common storage unit size people get during the holiday season is the 5×10. It is about the size of a walk-in closet. It can hold quite a few of the holiday decorations and maybe a few gifts.
A lot of people use self storage during the holiday season to hide the holiday goodies from the eyes of snooping family members. Some of our locations actually offer a special discount for storing holiday gifts. It is called “Santa’s Closet Special” and it allows the customer to utilize a storage unit for the holiday season. The deal is a 5×5 or 5×10 storage unit for $25.00 a month for the months of November and December. It is a very incredible holiday special. Stop in and ask your StorPlace Self Storage location if they are participating in this program.
