Kayaking Storage Tips

Here we are again, and spring time is drawing near. After being cooped up in the house for the last four months, I am itching to get back to the outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather I know is close.

I spend a lot of my time on the river, kayaking, more specifically. The last two weeks I have spent some time researching new trips to take this year. With the beautiful Stones River flowing right behind our StorPlace of Lebanon Pike location in Hermitage, I thought there would be no better place to kayak. One of the biggest issues when going kayaking is finding places to access the river that are public property. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency’s (TWRA) website has an interactive map with all the river access points listed, as well as boating regulations. I found a trip along the stretch of river close to the store where I work. It will be super convenient. All I have to do is swing by my storage unit to load up my gear and then just a short drive to the Greenway access.

Now for some important kayaking tips:

  • Always make sure someone knows your trip plans- In case there is an emergency, you want someone to know how/ where to find you.
  • Make sure the places you access the river are public access- do not trespass on private property.
  • Keep your cellphone in a safe, dry placeI always take my cellphone with me in the event of an emergency, but I have also lost a few in the river. I now keep it in a dry bag in a locked compartment of my kayak.
  • Always wear your life jacketThis is a good idea for everyone, but required by law for children 12 or under.
  • Carry a mesh laundry bag to pick up any trash you see during your tripPlease leave the river cleaner than you found it (you can get these cheap and they don’t hold water)
  • Take plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated
  • Pack a “dry bag” with extra clothing Not everyone makes it though the trip without flipping and sometimes it will rain and make it cold outside.

When the trip is over, now it’s time to store your kayak again. You always want to make sure it is completely dry before putting it back inside your storage unit. If it is not this can cause you to have mold issues. I have a shelf in my unit that I use to store my paddles, life jackets, and dry bags in an easy to find way. If you do not yet have a storage unit for your kayak, feel free to stop by StorPlace of Lebanon Pike. One of our manager’s will be happy to set you up with one.

Happy Paddling everyone!

Winter Storage

Heated and Cooled Storage Units at StorPlace Self StorageThere are many different reasons for needing storage during the winter months. It may be nothing out of the ordinary like storing items because of a move or needing to clean up the clutter. Maybe it’s not just the normal. Maybe you have to clean up that extra bedroom because you have company coming in town for the holidays. You may need to store that nice car  or motorcycle that you only drive during the summer. Also, you might need to store all of the extra decorations that you bought this year without one thought of where you are going to put them after the holidays are over. Whatever your reason for needing storage, there are several things you need to keep in mind when you are storing.

I constantly have people come in and say that they don’t need a heated and cooled unit because it is winter. Well think again! Just because it is winter does not mean you don’t have a need for heated and cooled storage. Yes it is true that moisture and humidity is down in the winter but we have to remember that we are in Tennessee and the humidity is never completely down. Also, sometime the extreme cold can do the same damage to wood furniture as heat can. If you don’t want the mattress you are storing to turn into a giant sponge by soaking up all the moisture in the air, then place it in a heated and cooled storing unit. Another issue could be water left in appliances. Residual water in a washing machine or refrigerator could freeze and then expand causing possible damage to those items. If you are not absolutely positive that you have removed all of the water from these machines, then it is a good idea to store them in a heated and cooled storage unit.

Next, make sure that any type of motor vehicle is winterized before storing. If you have a boat or RV that you need to store, the owner’s manual should walk you through the process of winterization. If you are storing a car for the winter, always check your antifreeze levels. If you have to add some antifreeze to the radiator don’t just consider the job done. After the antifreeze is added, start the vehicle and let it run long enough to get the radiator up to operating temperature. This will allow the thermostat to open letting the new antifreeze you added get into the engine block so that the engine itself will not freeze. There is also a product called “HEET” that you can add to your gas tank that will dry up any water that is in your gas so that it does not freeze during extremely low temps. No matter what kind of vehicle you are storing, always make sure the tires are full of air. Tires do tend to go flat during colder times during the year so unless you want a not-so-pleasant surprise of flat tires when you return in the summer make sure to check those tires often during the winter.

StorPlace Self Storage has 16 locations that can help with your winter storage needs. Stop in and ask our storage managers how we can assist with any of your storage questions.

enjoy the holidays!

Summer Storage

Summer and Storage go hand in handThe first week of March is full of very cold and inhospitable weather. The good thing is the cold will soon be long gone and be merely a memory very soon. Spring is on the way and before we know it summer will be out in full force. In Tennessee, we experience extremes in weather: very cold during the winter and very hot and humid during the summer. During the winter many people put life on hold and slow down a bit. Summer is a different story: people move, students go home for the summer and many people just get out and enjoy nature and the great weather. Renting a self-storage unit from StorPlace Self Storage can help with many of the activities that summer brings with it.

Below are a few examples of how renting a self storage unit during the summer months can help you and your family:

  • The summer months are the busiest time for moving and selling and buying homes. This is also the busiest time for the self storage industry. What do you do if you just bought a new house and are in the process of moving or you just sold your current home and need a place for your belongings during the transition?. A self-storage unit can be just what you need if you are waiting for your new house to be ready. Storage units can accommodate both short and long-term storage needs. Storage unit come in a variety of sizes from 5×5 to 10×30 for you store just a few of your belongings or the contents of an entire home. StorPlace Self Storage offers a wide range of units ranging from small to large but also standard units and heated & cooled units. Depending on the need, standard units are great for short-term storage or if you need a storage unit that you can pull right up to. Heated & cooled storage units are great for the long-term storage or if you have items that fare better in moderate temperatures.
  • Summer break is upon us, students are ready to return home. Students come from all over the country: some local while some travel from across the country. Students in school gather quite a bit of “stuff: including: fridges, microwaves, printers, televisions, clothes and even furniture. For students, a storage unit provides a safe and secure place to store their belongings while they are away from school for the summer months. Many students like to use smaller sized storage units such as a 5×5 or 5×10, which are great for your average student’s belongings.
  • With summer comes summer activities such as boating and camping. A storage facility such as StorPlace Self Storage is an excellent place to store your summer “toys”. Many people rent storage units to house jet skis and boats. Others like the convenience of parking or a covered parking space for larger boats and campers. People like having a place where they can park large recreational vehicles safely and securely. With 16 great locations in middle Tennessee and Bowling Green, Kentucky, there is always a StorPlace Self Storage nearby.

During the winter people tend to slow down a bit, but during the summer months people tend to go all out. Some people move homes, some are students going home for the summer, and many others just get out and enjoy summer. A self-storage unit or parking space like those offered by StorPlace Self Storage are great for whatever short or long-term storage needs you may have.

Help With Winterizing Your Boat

Boat Storage Tips

Time to store your boat for the off-season.

StorPlace Self Storage has many facilities that have storage for boats for the winter. We also offer a few tips and tricks to help you have the best storing experience and allow you to get your boat back on the water faster when it is lake time again. Winterizing your boat is never a fun task. It usually means that summer is on its way out-of-town and taking your fun on the water with it. The only thing that would be worse would be getting to next spring and finding out that your boat winterization efforts weren’t properly executed and your fun on the water will continue its hiatus until your boat is fixed.

1. Storage in the water means you might get a jump on the boating season next spring, but with our help and insight you can still do that. You can also decide to store your boat ashore. If you have a choice, storage ashore is a safer bet and with StorPlace Self Storage we give you the peace of mind to make it better and more protective. Out of the water storage may be less expensive over the life of a boat, since a hull surrounded by air for several months each winter is less likely to develop blisters. These blisters can occur on the hulls of  boats when water soaks into the laminate below the waterline.

2. We like to tell people that before anything else, you need to take your boat out for (at least) one more trip. Also, make notes about the things you want to repair, replace or modify on your boat. Once the list is complete and you have enjoyed your last few water adventures, it’s time to prepare projects to do on the boat for this fall,  winter and next spring.

3. When placing a boat in storage, don’t forget to remove as much gear from the boat as possible. Remove items that need to be cleaned and don’t forget to get your fire extinguishers maintained. Also, remove all garbage from the boat. Once the boat is cleaned inside and out, remember to leave the interior doors and lockers open so air can circulate. You might want to put out some moisture and odor absorbers, such as DampRid, just before you close up the boat. You can pick up DampRid at any of our locations.

4. To protect your boat’s engine while in storage, start by topping off your tanks (not more than 7/8 full to allow for expansion in the spring) and stabilizing your fuel. Change your engine oil and replace all the filters. Check the coolant in closed-cooling systems for the proper degree of protection. Check the hoses, belts and clamps. Make sure all your thru-hulls open and close, and then leave them open.

5. Covering your boat to keep the snow off is a good idea and there are just as many ways to do this as there are boat owners. We suggest that you make sure that your boat has a nice cover on it and that you secure it tightly.

RV Winter Storage

RV storage tips

RV storage is available at select StorPlace facilities.

It is time to put your RV back in storage. Sometimes storing a RV in your yard is not the best option due to home owners association and local ordinances. The best option for RV storage is a place you may not have thought about, but should come as no surprise: a storage facility. Many storage facilities offer storage for vehicles and boats. Some facilities even have big enough parking spaces to accommodate a medium to large RV. StorPlace of Rivergate offers covered parking for large RV’s.

There are certain steps that you need to follow in order to prepare your RV for storage for the winter. These suggestions are for both covered and non-covered RV parking.

1. Start by removing all food from the RV, as the food will spoil and produce a horrible smell and will also attract bugs. Even canned and bottled item can cause a problem as they can freeze and then burst.

2. Remove all clothes, blankets and linens and give the RV a good cleaning inside and out.  Dirt only gets more stubborn to remove over time.

3.Remove all valuables from the inside and outside of the RV.

4. Empty both fresh and waste water tanks at a dump station or RV camp as remaining water will get very nasty over time. Also, turn on the faucets and shower to purge and flush the system. And don’t forget to remove the water from the toilet and hot water heater.

5. Unlatch the tank drains and  then use a high pressure water spray on the inside of the tanks to remove any debris. After this is complete, use a compressor to blow out any water that is left in the lines. Then, fill the fresh water tank with 1-2 gallons of  antifreeze specially made for fresh water RV tanks. Do not use automotive antifreeze solutions.

6.  If your RV has a removable propane tank, please remove the tank, however, DO NOT place the tank inside the RV. If you do not have a removable tank, then fill the tank all the way full and disconnected the fuel lines from the RV, if possible. Make sure all propane supplied appliances are turned off and prop open the door to the fridge.

7. Fill your gas tanks and add a fuel stabilizer for the winter.

8. Make sure that all engine fluid levels are full. Add antifreeze agents to those fluids as needed. Also, make sure your batteries are fully charged and the water has been topped off.

9. The biggest item to remember is to make sure that the outside of the RV is very clean and that all of the seals on the windows and doors are in good working condition.Do any replacing or caulking before the winter storage.

10. Make sure that the RV is in good working order, so it will be ready to be used again in the spring/summer. Do any needed repairs on the vehicle before it is put in storage.

11. One of the best investments for a RV is a good quality cover to protect the exterior from rain, sun and snow.

Following these simple tips will help you enjoy your recreational vehicle investment for a really long time. Stop by our location in Madison, TN for more information about storing your RV!

Everything Self Storage

Keeping your items safely packed and stored is only one part of the equation. Knowing about your self storage facility’s policies, terms and conditions, and practices is also very important for a smooth self storage experience. We’ll give you important tips to keep in mind when dealing with self storage facilities.

Quantify Your Storage Load

Take stock of how big the items are that you need to store when choosing both the size of your self storage unit and a transportation method. Always estimate a bit over in the size unit you’ll need, as it’s best to have too much space than too little. Also consider if you’ll need a moving truck to get your stored items from the storage facility to home, or if a few friends and cars can do the job.

Get Help For The Heavy Stuff

Don’t tackle the heavy items alone, grab a few friends and load as a team. Take advantage of any free loading equipment that your storage facility provides like carts or dollies and save the stress on your back. If you’re lifting a lot of heavy items, you may want to look into lift assist straps or a lumbar support “back support belt”.

Deciding on a Unit

You have several options when finding the self storage unit that’s perfect for your needs. Some things to consider when choosing your unit include:

SIZE – Most units are sold according to square footage. Measure large items to ensure they will fit in the space you choose!

INDOOR or OUTDOOR – Outdoor facilities are best for large items like vehicles and lawn equipment, boxed items and valuables are better stored at indoor facilities.

ACCESS – Do you need 24/7 immediate access to your unit at all times? Will you need special equipment to load/unload?

Self Storage for Students & Military Personnel

Most people think of self storage as a permanent solution to their extra items, but what about when you only need to store your belongings for a few months? College students and active duty military personnel may only need 2-9 months of storage space, and many self storage facilities cater specifically to their needs.

Temporary Storage For College Students

When the cost of shipping your valuables to mom and dad’s house for safe-keeping while you’re on break blows your budget, you may want to consider self storage. The self storage facilities near your campus know that your storage needs are unique, which is why many of them will offer smaller units and discounts or special deals to students.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

Self storage is becoming a popular option for students across the country. If you know you’ll be going away for the summer or Christmas break, you should start looking for a unit well in advance. Otherwise, you may have to settle for a self storage facility that’s a few miles away from campus.

Now on to packing…

When storing your electronics, appliances, or valuables, you’ll need to make sure they are packed into suitable containers and organized accordingly. If you’ll be storing dishware and clothing, be sure to wash and dry everything before packing them into boxes or storage containers. Any leftover food or dirt can create mold or mildew and ruin your stored items.

Once your belongings are packed, you should take time to label your boxes and storage containers. Knowing where everything is will save you time when you get back to campus.

StorPlace Gives Tips on Storing Your Business’s Inventory

If you own a small business, you know it’s all about keeping the cost of running your business, as low as possible. One way that may help you in this area that you may not have considered, is storage. If you have inventory, you know the high cost of renting a suitable place. You have to sign a lease, pay utilities, provide some kind of security to protect your inventory, and in some cases, pay the cost of keeping up the property, such as cutting the grass, removal of leaves and tree trimming.

Consider storing your inventory at a self storage facility. No long term contracts, video monitoring, and fenced and gated properties for security, no utilities, and many different size storage units to suit your needs.
If your inventory requires storage in a temperature controlled storage unit, most self storage facilities offer them. If you are in need of 24 hour access to your unit, that may be granted with a small fee.

Some small businesses will need to have their inventory delivered to their storage. You know how inconvenient it can be to make sure you don’t miss the delivery. StorPlace Self Storage offers all of these conveniences, including deliveries to your storage unit in a secure setting. All deliveries are recorded with each entry into the gate. The deliverer has to come into the office to pick up the key and return the key when the delivery is complete. Now that’s convenient.

Restaurants can benefit from storage as well. With everyone on the go these days, fast food and calling in pick- up orders, are becoming more popular. Restaurants have very limited space for the to-go boxes and cups that need to be stored there, and running out of these supplies is not an option. To have a storage unit full of these supplies makes it more convenient than waiting on deliveries. The restaurant can watch the inventory kept in the store, and when it gets low, head to the storage to pick up the supplies there. Then when the storage unit supplies run low, order the supplies without the risk of running out in the restaurant. Pizza delivery restaurants usually have very limited space, and pizza boxes can take up a lot of that space. Running out of pizza boxes for a pizza delivery restaurant is bad for business.

Landscaping companies use self storage to keep the large mowers and landscaping equipment in, instead of putting it on their personal property. If you drive a vehicle in your business, such as tow trucks, box trucks for deliveries, or just have a company vehicle you don’t want parked on your personal property, consider storing in a safe and secure storage facility. Some folks even store their vehicles in a storage unit to protect it from the elements.

If you live in an apartment complex and own a motorcycle or a boat, you may not have a parking space to park it. Some apartments offer extra at spaces for a price. At a storage facility, you get the security for your vehicle you feel comfortable with.

So if you are a business owner, a restaurant in need of dry supply storage, a boat or motorcycle owner with limited parking at your home, or just someone who has way too much stuff and nowhere to put it, consider storage. It’s convenient, secure and cost effective.
