Spring Cleaning Advice for Your Garage

Spring Cleaning Advice for Your Garage

For many Americans, the garage tends to be a holding area for all sorts of objects. Broken tools or appliances, future projects (that may or may not be completed) and a variety of other items can overwhelm the space if you’re not careful. Make sure your spring cleaning plan includes some quality time in the garage.A teenage boy helps clean the garage.

How to Clean the Garage

The following list is a good place to start, but you may want to take a few extra minutes to customize it to your situation. Work smarter, not harder!

  1. Start with a blank canvas. Before you can turn your garage into a carefully organized work of art, you have to clean it out. Move items to your patio, driveway or yard. Instead of shuffling things from side to side (and shuffling dirt and dust around with them), this will ensure that you’re able to wipe out all the dirt in one pass. It will also let you know just how much stuff has accumulated in your garage. You might be surprised at what you find!
  2. Dust, sweep and rinse. Dust off any unmovable surfaces like large shelving units, wall-mounted organization racks and anything else that’s stuck in there. Once the dust has settled, break out the broom and dustpan. Finish everything off with a mop and bucket or at least a good spray from the water hose. If you keep the floor clean out here, you’ll minimize the mess that follows the family’s feet into the house.
  3. Determine what stays and what goes. Anything that’s clearly unsalvageable should be tossed. If you have some broken items that you’ve been meaning to get around to repairing eventually, be honest with yourself about the likelihood of that day coming. Some items could be donated to local charities or taken to recycling centers. Sort through it all and decide what should have a place in your home.
  4. Get it together. Now that you’ve made the hard decisions, it’s time to get organized! Group items by themes so you can easily find them when you need them. You might need to get some shelving units or containers to keep everything nice and neat going forward. Once it’s all in place, try to maintain it! If you let little messes mount up, it gets easier and easier to delay the cleaning effort until you’re left with a big job—like today.

Winter Storage

Heated and Cooled Storage Units at StorPlace Self StorageThere are many different reasons for needing storage during the winter months. It may be nothing out of the ordinary like storing items because of a move or needing to clean up the clutter. Maybe it’s not just the normal. Maybe you have to clean up that extra bedroom because you have company coming in town for the holidays. You may need to store that nice car  or motorcycle that you only drive during the summer. Also, you might need to store all of the extra decorations that you bought this year without one thought of where you are going to put them after the holidays are over. Whatever your reason for needing storage, there are several things you need to keep in mind when you are storing.

I constantly have people come in and say that they don’t need a heated and cooled unit because it is winter. Well think again! Just because it is winter does not mean you don’t have a need for heated and cooled storage. Yes it is true that moisture and humidity is down in the winter but we have to remember that we are in Tennessee and the humidity is never completely down. Also, sometime the extreme cold can do the same damage to wood furniture as heat can. If you don’t want the mattress you are storing to turn into a giant sponge by soaking up all the moisture in the air, then place it in a heated and cooled storing unit. Another issue could be water left in appliances. Residual water in a washing machine or refrigerator could freeze and then expand causing possible damage to those items. If you are not absolutely positive that you have removed all of the water from these machines, then it is a good idea to store them in a heated and cooled storage unit.

Next, make sure that any type of motor vehicle is winterized before storing. If you have a boat or RV that you need to store, the owner’s manual should walk you through the process of winterization. If you are storing a car for the winter, always check your antifreeze levels. If you have to add some antifreeze to the radiator don’t just consider the job done. After the antifreeze is added, start the vehicle and let it run long enough to get the radiator up to operating temperature. This will allow the thermostat to open letting the new antifreeze you added get into the engine block so that the engine itself will not freeze. There is also a product called “HEET” that you can add to your gas tank that will dry up any water that is in your gas so that it does not freeze during extremely low temps. No matter what kind of vehicle you are storing, always make sure the tires are full of air. Tires do tend to go flat during colder times during the year so unless you want a not-so-pleasant surprise of flat tires when you return in the summer make sure to check those tires often during the winter.

StorPlace Self Storage has 16 locations that can help with your winter storage needs. Stop in and ask our storage managers how we can assist with any of your storage questions.

enjoy the holidays!

Storing a car during the winter months

Car Storage TipsThe leaves are changing, the leaves are falling, and the rain will not go away. This is a sure sign that fall is upon us. If you are in need of storage for your car, trailer, motorcycle or RV, Storplace of Hickory Hollow is the place for you. We offer convenient parking spaces and storage unit sizes to park your valuable items. We offer outdoor storage and two different sizes of parking space. If you plan on storing a car, here are some tips to make sure your vehicle remains operable and in good condition while in storage.

The first step to storing your vehicle is to decide if you would like to store it in a storage unit or outside parking space. If you choose to store your car outside, keep in mind that this decisions leaves your car vulnerable to the various elements such as precipitation and over-exposure to the sun. The precipitation can cause your car to rust and the sunlight can cause the paint to rust or peel and damage your tires. A high-quality car cover is highly recommended if you plan to keep your car in an outside parking space. If you decide to store your vehicle in an enclosed storage unit this will protect it from all outside elements such as the sun, precipitation, rust, and extreme temperatures. An outside storage space is also handy if there are other items that you need to store, you can stack those items around your car to make the best use of the space. If you are able to drive your car for 15 minutes once per week, this will also help with the overall care of your vehicle until you remove it from storage. Below you will find some other quick tips for car storage:

  • Purchase a quality car cover to help reduce dirt, dust, or rust from developing
  • Change the oil, brake fluid/coolant and filter
  • Fill the car with gas; it is not a good idea to store a vehicle with an empty tank because this can cause moisture to build in the tank
  • Disconnect the battery and get your tires balanced and rotated. It is also a good idea to jack the car up so that the tires do not develop flats
  • Lastly, release your parking brake so that there is not an issue with your brake pads sticking to your rotors

We have various storage options at Storplace Self Storage of Hickory Hollow to fulfill all your needs from car storage to storing items from your house. We are located at 5251 Mt. View Rd. Antioch, TN 37013 and would love to assist you.

RV Winter Storage

RV storage tips

RV storage is available at select StorPlace facilities.

It is time to put your RV back in storage. Sometimes storing a RV in your yard is not the best option due to home owners association and local ordinances. The best option for RV storage is a place you may not have thought about, but should come as no surprise: a storage facility. Many storage facilities offer storage for vehicles and boats. Some facilities even have big enough parking spaces to accommodate a medium to large RV. StorPlace of Rivergate offers covered parking for large RV’s.

There are certain steps that you need to follow in order to prepare your RV for storage for the winter. These suggestions are for both covered and non-covered RV parking.

1. Start by removing all food from the RV, as the food will spoil and produce a horrible smell and will also attract bugs. Even canned and bottled item can cause a problem as they can freeze and then burst.

2. Remove all clothes, blankets and linens and give the RV a good cleaning inside and out.  Dirt only gets more stubborn to remove over time.

3.Remove all valuables from the inside and outside of the RV.

4. Empty both fresh and waste water tanks at a dump station or RV camp as remaining water will get very nasty over time. Also, turn on the faucets and shower to purge and flush the system. And don’t forget to remove the water from the toilet and hot water heater.

5. Unlatch the tank drains and  then use a high pressure water spray on the inside of the tanks to remove any debris. After this is complete, use a compressor to blow out any water that is left in the lines. Then, fill the fresh water tank with 1-2 gallons of  antifreeze specially made for fresh water RV tanks. Do not use automotive antifreeze solutions.

6.  If your RV has a removable propane tank, please remove the tank, however, DO NOT place the tank inside the RV. If you do not have a removable tank, then fill the tank all the way full and disconnected the fuel lines from the RV, if possible. Make sure all propane supplied appliances are turned off and prop open the door to the fridge.

7. Fill your gas tanks and add a fuel stabilizer for the winter.

8. Make sure that all engine fluid levels are full. Add antifreeze agents to those fluids as needed. Also, make sure your batteries are fully charged and the water has been topped off.

9. The biggest item to remember is to make sure that the outside of the RV is very clean and that all of the seals on the windows and doors are in good working condition.Do any replacing or caulking before the winter storage.

10. Make sure that the RV is in good working order, so it will be ready to be used again in the spring/summer. Do any needed repairs on the vehicle before it is put in storage.

11. One of the best investments for a RV is a good quality cover to protect the exterior from rain, sun and snow.

Following these simple tips will help you enjoy your recreational vehicle investment for a really long time. Stop by our location in Madison, TN for more information about storing your RV!

What Storage Facility Should I Choose

How do you choose the right self storage facility depends on your current needs. Are you a business looking to store some inventory or how about a vehicle? Are you going to storing items for personal use or maybe a family member’s possessions that has recently passed away? Whatever the reason for needing storage, there is a storage facility out there just right for your needs.

Let’s start with the concerns that most people have about storage. Number one you want your belongings to be safe and you want yourself to be safe while you are at the facility. Check out what type of security the facility has. Does it have enough lighting to make sure you are not going to be left in the dark after the sun goes down? You want to make sure that the storage facility extremely bright outside lighting, as bright as an airport runway if possible. Extremely bright lighting also tends to run off any type of criminal activity. You also want to make sure that the facility has security cameras and make sure that they are recording 24hrs a day. Gate access is another security concern. Make sure that the gate has shut off hrs i.e. 6am to 10pm; this is a very good security feature as only the tenants would know that the gate shuts off at a certain time. A criminal may be banking on the fact that they will be able to follow a tenant out of the property late in the evening but to their surprise they would be stuck on the property until the next morning. Another feature to notice about the gate is to make sure you have to have a code to get IN and OUT of the property. The biggest security feature is of course the staff, so get to know the employees well at you self storage facility as they are the ones who keep an eye out on the property.

Next topic to take a look at is the location of the storage facility. You do want to make sure that the storage facility is in a decent area and is going to serve your needs well. Storage of a company vehicle is a great reason to look at the location and can save you a lot of money each day.  If your company is located on the outskirts of town then having a vehicle that only make trips or deliveries in town parked in town then it could save your company quite a bit of gas cost each and every day. Also it doesn’t make much since to have all of your business inventory located way outside of your customer base. If all of your deliveries are in a certain town, then put your inventory in a storage unit in that tow

We can provide supplies and a place for you to store your belongings

n and save gas, wear and tear, and employee time of driving back and forth to get inventory. Besides having a business, you may have personal reasons for the location of your storage unit for example do you want it near your home or work? Probably the location will matter on where you will be the most when you are accessing the unit.

Whatever your reason for the storage in the Madison/Rivergate area, there will be a Storplace Self Storage facility with the just the right location and features you are looking for.

There are many things you can do to keep your self storage unit organized. Here at StorPlace you’ll find valuable self storage packing information that will help you protect your stored items and make life easier.

Everything Self Storage

Keeping your items safely packed and stored is only one part of the equation. Knowing about your self storage facility’s policies, terms and conditions, and practices is also very important for a smooth self storage experience. We’ll give you important tips to keep in mind when dealing with self storage facilities.

Quantify Your Storage Load

Take stock of how big the items are that you need to store when choosing both the size of your self storage unit and a transportation method. Always estimate a bit over in the size unit you’ll need, as it’s best to have too much space than too little. Also consider if you’ll need a moving truck to get your stored items from the storage facility to home, or if a few friends and cars can do the job.

Get Help For The Heavy Stuff

Don’t tackle the heavy items alone, grab a few friends and load as a team. Take advantage of any free loading equipment that your storage facility provides like carts or dollies and save the stress on your back. If you’re lifting a lot of heavy items, you may want to look into lift assist straps or a lumbar support “back support belt”.

Deciding on a Unit

You have several options when finding the self storage unit that’s perfect for your needs. Some things to consider when choosing your unit include:

SIZE – Most units are sold according to square footage. Measure large items to ensure they will fit in the space you choose!

INDOOR or OUTDOOR – Outdoor facilities are best for large items like vehicles and lawn equipment, boxed items and valuables are better stored at indoor facilities.

ACCESS – Do you need 24/7 immediate access to your unit at all times? Will you need special equipment to load/unload?

Self Storage for Students & Military Personnel

Most people think of self storage as a permanent solution to their extra items, but what about when you only need to store your belongings for a few months? College students and active duty military personnel may only need 2-9 months of storage space, and many self storage facilities cater specifically to their needs.

Temporary Storage For College Students

When the cost of shipping your valuables to mom and dad’s house for safe-keeping while you’re on break blows your budget, you may want to consider self storage. The self storage facilities near your campus know that your storage needs are unique, which is why many of them will offer smaller units and discounts or special deals to students.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

Self storage is becoming a popular option for students across the country. If you know you’ll be going away for the summer or Christmas break, you should start looking for a unit well in advance. Otherwise, you may have to settle for a self storage facility that’s a few miles away from campus.

Now on to packing…

When storing your electronics, appliances, or valuables, you’ll need to make sure they are packed into suitable containers and organized accordingly. If you’ll be storing dishware and clothing, be sure to wash and dry everything before packing them into boxes or storage containers. Any leftover food or dirt can create mold or mildew and ruin your stored items.

Once your belongings are packed, you should take time to label your boxes and storage containers. Knowing where everything is will save you time when you get back to campus.
