Three Key Factors When Choosing Self-Storage

StorPlace of Hickory Hollow

When storing there are many factors to consider so do your research:

  • Choosing the right packing supplies is a very important starting with boxes and tape.
  • Picking the right location for storing your goods is very important.
  • Deciding on the right storage unit for your storing need is the most important thing to consider.

The self-storage tips below will help you make an informed decision on all your self-storage needs.

Packing for Self-Storage

First thing in storing is packing your personal goods. Boxes are the easiest and most convenient way to pack. Many people have the notion that the bigger the box the better, not always the case. When selecting boxes think about what you are storing and who will be moving it. Small boxes which are great for heavier items, such as books and dishes, can get heavy very quickly. Larger boxes are great for storing lighter items such as towels, blankets, and comforters.  StorPlace Self Storage offers many special-sized boxes, like mirror boxes, which are great for storing mirrors or paintings. Remember when using boxes to properly secure them with tape and filler material like bubble wrap and foam peanuts for extra security.

Storage Location

When storing your personal belongings in self-storage, an important consideration is location.  A secure and conveniently located storage facility is always a plus. For example if you are moving to a new town, it is best to find a storage facility closer to where you will be moving instead of one across town. The more convenient a location is to where you live the easier it is to access your personal goods. StorPlace Self Storage has 14 conveniently located and secure storage facilities in middle Tennessee ready to accommodate all your storage needs. Location is a convenience when dealing with self-storage.

Selecting a Storage Unit Size

Once you have packed your belongings and determined the right self-storage location for your storing needs, you must select an appropriate storage unit. Storage units come in many different sizes and with many different features. Selecting the right storage unit for your belongings sometime requires a little extra insight. The storage professionals at StorPlace Self Storage can provide the insight and help to determine the storage unit size  that will best serve you. Do you require a small or large unit or a drive up unit, or maybe a heated and cooled unit? These are just a few of the questions that a property manager can assist you with.  Your personal belongings are very important and you want to take great care of them. Choosing a storage unit should be no different; take the same care when selecting your self-storage unit.

There is no unimportant part to self-storage. Starting with getting the proper packing supplies and materials necessary for the job ahead. Another very important part of storing with self-storage is find a location that suits you best, a location down the road is better than across town. Finally, select the right unit for your storage needs, if you don’t know ask! A storage professional will help you determine what type of unit would benefit you the most and if that unit will be enough or not enough for your storing needs.

Organizing Tips to Start off the New Year

Starting January with Organization ProjectsHappy New Year everyone! We hope you had a warm and safe holiday season! Now that it’s January, it’s a great time to start looking at some organizational ideas. We might have some holiday décor or things we do not have any room for, but just can’t let go of. Here at StorPlace Self Storage, we enjoy being organized. Let’s take a look at an effective way to get organized this first quarter. We’ll also look at some events that are going to be taking place in January.

Organization Tips

Get Organized with Storage Bins

I love decorating for the holidays; I usually shop the “after holiday sales” and accrue more décor and such from time-to-time. Want to know a fantastic way to organize your seasonal décor? First, I would suggest purchasing quite a few sturdy totes. Then I would grab a sharpie and all the decorations that need to be stored. Next, I would suggest packing all of your totes by holiday or however you would like. Go ahead and write on the outside of the tote facing you, which holiday is being stored within. Lastly, organize all of your totes in order as the holidays occur. You could also do this with other belongings. There could be a small section dedicated to photographs, crafts or even scrapbooking supplies. This would be a great idea to have access to and not have to dig through the totes or containers. If storing totes and other kinds of bins, purchasing a storage shelf organizer would be a great idea. A shelf organizer would reduce any back pains from having to move things to get to that one tote or bin you need.

Things to Do

With the holidays over, there’s still some fun to get into this month! Here’s some fun things that will be happening nearby…

Southern Invitational Indoor Tractor and Truck Pull

For those interested in motorsports, the Southern Invitational Indoor Truck and Tractor Pull will take place at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, on Friday January 29th and Saturday January 30th.  This would be a great event to take the whole family to for an action packed time!

At StorPlace Self Storage of Barfield, we hope you have a bright and beautiful year ahead!

What Else Does StorPlace Self Storage Sell?

Moving & Packing supplies at StorPlaceWhen customers walk in to a storage facility they expect the facility to only rent storage space. However StorPlace Self Storage also provides packing supplies from boxes to tape to packing peanuts.

We offer boxes from small boxes to extra-large boxes as well as odd-shaped boxes for specific items. Let’s start by saying that small boxes are best for heavier items such as books, cd’s, and dishes. These items don’t sound too heavy, but when you start filling up a box with them, it can get extremely heavy very quickly. The next size up,the medium boxes, are the most popular and versatile box that StorPlace Self Storage sells. This particular box is perfect for kid’s toys, collectables, and small appliances.  Also available for purchase are large boxes and Ex-Large boxes. These boxes are ideal for storing large or bulky items such as clothing, shoes and linens.

StorPlace Self Storage has different size boxes for purchase that can fit your specific need including lamp base boxes, mirror boxes, and wardrobe boxes. Mirror boxes are also great for framed pictures or framed artwork. Wardrobe boxes are wonderful because they are 48 inches tall and 24 inches wide with a metal bar across the top to hold hung-up clothing. This way you don’t even have to take you clothes off the hanger to move them. Just pull them out of your closet and hang them directly in the wardrobe box. Clothes can be moved or stored without getting wrinkled or dirty reducing the amount of laundry that you need to do right after your move.

StorPlace Self Storage also sells box kits to get you moving in the right direction. It is real easy to see what size boxes you need when you are at home looking at your belongings, but once you leave your home and make it to a store that sells boxes it gets a little harder to pick out what you need. The box kit contains the most popular size boxes, a roll of tape, and some bubble wrap. There is also a kitchen kit that contains the same items as the regular box kit with an additional 10lb box of wrapping paper.

As you can see StorPlace Self Storage is a one stop shop for all your moving and storage needs.

Paint and decorate to your heart’s content! Have your little ones design their own box; it’s a great way to be crafty and spend some quality time together before they are off to school again.

Sometimes, school can get stressful for students and they can easily get overwhelmed and anxious, here is another (Yep, another!) DIY project for your child or college freshman: OPEN WHEN CARDS!

These are very fun to make and very cost-efficient, all you have to do is visit your local dollar store and pick up a few pre-packaged blank cards with envelopes as well as a few goodies to put in if you’d like!  If your child is in grade school, make sure to talk to your child’s teacher before putting any candy, toys, or something that may not be allowed in school into the envelopes!

Some ideas for the cards are:

  1. Open When… You Miss Me: A mailable hug is great when you can’t be there to hug someone physically. A collection of photos is perfect when someone is missing your sweet face. Send your scent with a spritz of perfume or even better – long lasting scented paper!
  1. Open When… You’re Stressed: Bubble wrap to pop for some instant stress relief! Encouraging photos or inside jokes to get them laughing or smiling! A motivational letter including letting them know why they rock and why there’s no reason to stress!
  1. Open When… You’re sad: Cut a corner off an old blanket or pillowcase of theirs, it will remind them of home. The words of their favorite song, or poem or a piece of their favorite candy are all great ways to put a smile on someone’s face.

You can make as many of these “Open When…” cards as you would like, the topics are endless and the sky is the limit on these things! Fill them with all of your child’s favorite little goodies. You can stack and tie them together with some twine, put them in a photo box to put inside their locker, sneak a few in their back pack, the possibilities are endless! So, get creative!

Making the Most of Your Storage Unit

Storage Solutions at StorPlace Self Storage

When storing for the first time, there is a lot of useful information and tips available to help you make the best decision for your belongings. The property manager of the storage facility you use should also be knowledgeable about your needs. Learning how to properly utilize the square footage of your unit is very helpful. It is also important to know what causes mildew and how to prevent it, especially if you have chosen a non-climate controlled or heated & cooled building.

If you are packing boxes for storage, more is not always better. Of course you want to fill the boxes with the most items possible, but boxes of heavy or fragile items should not be too heavy. Packing heavy items creates a risk of the bottom of your box falling out, so the less weight, the better. Try to use no more than 2 different sized boxes. This will make it much easier to stack and organize them in the storage unit. When putting items in the storage unit, leave a small isle in-between boxes, so you can easily access your items. Most people say they will not need anything out of the unit, but more times than not, a return visit is necessary. Label boxes not only on top, but also on the side. This helps if the boxes are stacked, you are still able to read what is in the box. Packing boxes by room, bedroom, kitchen, etc. makes not only storing easier, but will help with unpacking once you reach your new home. Plastic totes are also a great way to utilize space. Not only are they roomy but the lids are sealed tightly, the sides are clear so you can see what is inside of each one, without opening them, and they are made with sturdy plastic, which will make stacking much easier and safe.

Utilizing the square footage in your storage unit is also vital to maximize the use of your unit. Even something as small as removing the legs from a table, can help make more usable square footage. When possible you can also place items vertically not horizontally. Hollow spots in appliances and furniture, like wardrobes, stoves and refrigerators, can usually hold small boxes inside of them. Use wardrobe boxes for clothes. One wardrobe box takes up a lot less space than bags or boxes full of clothes and it also makes them easier to access if you have forgotten something.

Another suggestion to protect your belongings is are make sure your boxes are sealed and taped tightly. This will prevent dust, bugs, or other unwanted things from getting inside your boxes. You should drain all fluids from tools and equipment, but oil them down to prevent rust. Breakables and fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap and packed tightly in the box, so they don’t slide around. Mirrors and pictures should always be stored vertical, not flat. Laying them flat causes a risk of items being set on top of them or accidentally getting stepped on.

Most people believe sealing items up in plastic bags is protecting them, but actually it invites mildew. Other ways to avoid mildew are making sure refrigerators and freezers are defrosted and the door left cracked open, and drain your washing machine well.

Packing Kitchen Items for Moving or Storage

How to pack breakablesWe all know that moving is not a fun event.  That is why StorPlace Self Storage managers are dedicated to providing you with the best customer service possible.  If you are in the market for storage then start by making a smart decision and take a look at one of the many StorPlace Self Storage locations near you.  You will be treated with respect.  Each manager will listen to your needs and accommodate you on a personal level.  It will be an easy and stress free environment.  Come see for yourself!

The following is a quick tutorial on how to pack your kitchen items which will make it easier for your moving day in the long-run.  Most people are in a hurry to get the moving done and there is not much planning involved.  Here are a few tips to get the ball moving forward.  Let’s start with the kitchen.  The best items to start with in the kitchen are the glasses and plates.  It is very helpful to make sure your dishes and glasses are clean before you pack them.  StorPlace Self Storage offers a kitchen box kit that makes packing the kitchen a breeze.  The kit includes 10 small boxes, 7 medium boxes, 25’ of bubble wrap, tape, and a 10 pound bundle of news print.  This will get you moving in the right direction.  You may also want to pick up either a dish kit or a glass packing kit.  These two kits have inserts that will fit into the small boxes that are included in the kitchen kit so there is no need to buy any extra boxes.  The most cost-effective way to pack some of your larger items would be to buy large and X-large boxes.  These boxes are great for clothes, quilts, and lighter items because you can put a lot into them.

You will also notice that the glass packing kit has some small foam inserts.  Put your glasses one at a time into the foam inserts and then put them neatly in the cardboard grid that comes with the glass packing kit.  Make sure to fill up this box all the way to the top.  If you have small glasses or you do not have enough glasses to fill up the kit, then use the newsprint that came with the kitchen box kit to fill the empty space.  If you do not fill the box completely then it can cause the box to collapse during the move or during storage. Repeat these steps for the dish kit as it works the same way.   For more informational tips on packing and storing, see our packing and storage videos and information at our website.

Storage Mistakes

Pack boxes for moving and storage correctlyAt StorPlace Self Storage we have seen many people make all sorts of mistakes while either preparing to store or actually packing your belongings in a unit.  Here are just a few of the more common mistakes.

  • Not thinking about insuring your items – Most people don’t realize that most storage facilities don’t insure your items automatically. We do offer a low-cost solution to this problem:  StorPlace Property Protection.  Some form of insurance is a requirement at most if not all storage facilities, whether it is homeowner’s/renters insurance or our StorPlace Property Protection.
  • Wrapping items in the wrong material – Do not use newspaper to wrap items. The ink can bleed onto the item being wrapped causing you to clean it all over again.  Some items can be harder to clean ink off of than others. StorPlace Self Storage offers ink free newsprint to wrap your items in.
  •  Not having enough time or help – Moving is not a fun time for anyone involved and it can be difficult to keep track of everything. You need to make sure you have enough time so that you are not rushed. If you are rushed, you will not pack as neatly and as organized as it could be.  Also, you could potentially cause damage to some items you are storing.
  • Not labelling properly – Make sure you label each box because there is nothing worse than having to go through each and every box looking for one thing. An easy way to do this is to make a “table of contents”.  To do this, just number the boxes and on a separate sheet of paper, write the number of the box and the contents out to the side.  We have plenty of boxes and packing supplies to help with this process at StorPlace Self Storage.

If you have any additional questions about anything that was mentioned above or anything regarding your storage needs feel free to give us a call at (615) 826-1700.

What Type of Box Do You Need?

Some people like to take the time to make sure their belongings make it safely to their new destination. Others just want to get everything moved and done as soon as possible. When packing your boxes, size and weight does matter.  You want to be sure to put all of your smaller, heavier items in small or medium size boxes.  This enables you to carry the heavier things more easily because there is not as much weight to carry at one time with the small and medium boxes.  Good items to pack in small and medium boxes are heavy figurines, books, CD’s or DVD’s, and dishes.  When packing those heavy items, you want to make sure you wrap them securely before boxing them up.  At StorPlace Self Storage, we have the right stuff for your wrapping needs. We have bubble wrap, newsprint, packing peanuts, and foam sheets. We also have dish and glass kits, which are cardboard grids with foam sleeves that will fit in our small boxes so that you can neatly wrap and pack your fragile dinnerware.

Next, StorPlace Self Storage has large and extra-large boxes for your bigger, bulkier items, such as bedding, pillows, computer equipment, clothing, and cookware.  All of the regular packing boxes at StorPlace Self Storage have hand holes on opposite sides of the box to make it easy for carrying from one place to another.  We do have boxes that are made for more specific needs, such as lamp boxes, mirror boxes, and wardrobe boxes.  The mirror boxes are great for mirrors, paintings, art, and flat screen TVs.  We have small and large mirror boxes depending on the size of your items.  Our wardrobe boxes are really good for storing nicer clothing. The wardrobe boxes come with a metal bar that hangs from the top of the box so you can use your hangers and still are able to hang your nicer clothing and keep them from getting wrinkled.

Finally, to complete your box packing, you should secure your boxes with tape of course!  Why buy your packing tape elsewhere when you can get it at StorPlace Self Storage when you pick up your boxes?  We have clear packing tape and paper tape.  The paper tape is great for using on the bottom of the boxes and gives your boxes added strength and security underneath. We also have tape guns and dispensers to make taping everything a little easier and faster for you.

We have tie down rope, box labels, shrink-wrap, moving blankets, etc.  There is a plethora of different moving, storing, and packing supplies in our stores that you may not realize you need until the last minute.  So whether you’re looking for items to make your move go more smoothly or you’re looking for an odd size box to ship that odd-shaped item, you can be sure that when you step into StorPlace Self Storage, you will leave with what you need and have no worries.
