What Else Does StorPlace Self Storage Sell?

Moving & Packing supplies at StorPlaceWhen customers walk in to a storage facility they expect the facility to only rent storage space. However StorPlace Self Storage also provides packing supplies from boxes to tape to packing peanuts.

We offer boxes from small boxes to extra-large boxes as well as odd-shaped boxes for specific items. Let’s start by saying that small boxes are best for heavier items such as books, cd’s, and dishes. These items don’t sound too heavy, but when you start filling up a box with them, it can get extremely heavy very quickly. The next size up,the medium boxes, are the most popular and versatile box that StorPlace Self Storage sells. This particular box is perfect for kid’s toys, collectables, and small appliances.  Also available for purchase are large boxes and Ex-Large boxes. These boxes are ideal for storing large or bulky items such as clothing, shoes and linens.

StorPlace Self Storage has different size boxes for purchase that can fit your specific need including lamp base boxes, mirror boxes, and wardrobe boxes. Mirror boxes are also great for framed pictures or framed artwork. Wardrobe boxes are wonderful because they are 48 inches tall and 24 inches wide with a metal bar across the top to hold hung-up clothing. This way you don’t even have to take you clothes off the hanger to move them. Just pull them out of your closet and hang them directly in the wardrobe box. Clothes can be moved or stored without getting wrinkled or dirty reducing the amount of laundry that you need to do right after your move.

StorPlace Self Storage also sells box kits to get you moving in the right direction. It is real easy to see what size boxes you need when you are at home looking at your belongings, but once you leave your home and make it to a store that sells boxes it gets a little harder to pick out what you need. The box kit contains the most popular size boxes, a roll of tape, and some bubble wrap. There is also a kitchen kit that contains the same items as the regular box kit with an additional 10lb box of wrapping paper.

As you can see StorPlace Self Storage is a one stop shop for all your moving and storage needs.

Many teachers use our packing paper for coloring or drawing paper for their classrooms. We even have people buy the blank newsprint to shred up and keep puppies, bunnies or other little animals warm and not get all the ink from regular newspapers all over their sweet fur.

Lamp Boxes and Golf Bags

StorPlace has boxes to fit all things from golf bags to lamps

StorPlace of Bowling Green is now in the golf bag shipping business! Well, not really. It just seems that way. Toward the beginning of the summer, a gentleman came in and looked at the boxes in our retail display. He decided that our lamp base box was the perfect size for shipping golf bags. As it turns out, he needed eight of them. Lucky for him, StorPlace Self Storage has a ‘buy three, get one free’ special on most box sizes. Of course, we couldn’t let him leave without asking how he had acquired so many golf bags. He said that not only does he play golf, but he keeps an eye out for great used golf equipment. This led him to the basement of an acquaintance. The basement was full of all kinds of golf clubs, bags, and accessories. After talking it over, our customer, let’s call him “Mr. Golf”, agreed he would get into the eBay golf business and bought out the contents of that basement. In a short while, his eBay business was up and running and he needed to ship golf bags out to his customers.

At StorPlace of Bowling Green, we normally stock the most common size shipping boxes. However, up to the point “Mr. Golf” came in the store, we usually didn’t have more than ten lamp base boxes to sell. Since he bought all of that style, we needed to order more but how many should we get? The best person to ask was “Mr. Golf”. He said he had, at that time, about 30 bags advertised on his eBay site, and all with active bids. So, we put in an order for 30 lamp base boxes. He said he would be back to buy them and he has proven true to his word. He is our best recent retail customer.

Strangely enough, on a day not too long ago, we thought that “Mr. Golf” had a box buying competitor.  A woman came into the store and asked to buy four lamp base boxes. During the conversation over the sale, she said the boxes were for shipping golf bags. We couldn’t let that one go by, so we told her about “Mr.Golf” and his eBay business. She told us that she is his girlfriend and was sent on a box buying errand!

Come to think of it, I don’t believe we have ever sold a lamp base box for customer to actually pack a lamp. For example: a decorator needed a few of the larger boxes to transport tall fluted glass flower vases or another customer planned to store a croquet set. Regardless, we are glad to offer the boxes to folks who need them. And did I mention that we just ordered sixty additional lamp base boxes for a certain eBay businessman?

How to Choose the Best Storage Facility

StorPlace Self Storage

StorPlace can help you find the best storage unit for your storage needs.

When storing there are many factors to consider, so do your research. The number one  factor when storing is choosing the right storage unit for your storing needs. Lastly, it is important to have the correct packing supplies for your belongings starting with boxes and tape. Hopefully, this guide will help you make an informed decision for all your self-storage needs.

First thing to do when storing is packing your personal goods. Boxes are the easiest and most convenient way to pack. Many people think that the bigger the box the better, but that is not always the case. When selecting boxes think about what you are storing and who will be moving it. Small boxes are great for heavier items, such as books and dishes as these type items can get heavy very quickly. Larger boxes are great for storing lighter items such as towels, blankets, and comforters.  Also, many storage companies, such as StorPlace Self Storage, offer specialized boxes like mirror boxes, which are great for storing mirrors or paintings. Remember when storing items in boxes to properly secure them with tape and filler material like bubble wrap and foam peanuts.

When storing your personal belongings in self-storage, the location of the storage facility is important to consider.  A secure and conveniently located storage facility is always a plus. If you are moving to a new town, it is better to find a storage facility closer to where you will be moving to instead of one across town. It is more convenient to access your personal goods at a storage facility that is close to you.  StorPlace Self Storage has 16 conveniently located and secure storage facilities in middle Tennessee ready to accommodate all your storage needs.

Once you have packed your belongings and determined the right self-storage location for your storing needs, you must select an appropriate storage unit. Storage units come in many different sizes, and with many different features. Storage professionals, such as the ones at StorPlace Self Storage, can help determine the storage unit which will best serve your needs. Do you require a small or large unit? A drive up unit? A heated and cooled unit? These are just a few of the questions that a property manager can assist you with.  Your personal belonging are very important, you take great care of them, choosing a storage unit should be no different. Take the same care when selecting your self-storage unit.

There is no unimportant part of self storage. Start with the necessary packing supplies, such as boxes and tape, for the storing or moving job ahead. Another very important part of storing with self-storage is finding a location that suits you best; a location down the road is better than across town. Lastly, select the right unit for your storage needs, if you don’t know, ask. A storage professional will help you determine what type of unit would benefit you the most and if that unit will be enough or not enough for your storing needs.

Moving Day

Moving can be stressful no matter if it is your first time, or your hundredth. At StorPlace Self Storage, we want to help alleviate some of that stress by providing you with a few moving tips that you might not have thought of:

  • Pack an overnight back that contains all of your daily essentials (or must needs) like a change of clothes, soap, toothbrush & toothpaste, towels, snacks, etc. You may also want to personally carry your laptop and other sensitive items (like jewelry) that could be stolen or misplaced during the move.
  • Label or number your boxes and make sure to include the room they need to end up in.  If you number them, write down what’s in each box on a separate sheet of paper. This will give you an inventory list of the contents of the boxes, so you can keep track of the items that you are moving. This will also help as an inventory list if you are using a moving company.  Other labeling methods that you can use include assigning a color to each room and putting a piece of colored tape on the corresponding box and door frame. Doing this will let the movers know which room each box belongs in.
  • If you have the opportunity, show up to your new home before moving in to clean the bathroom and kitchen.  It is also a good idea to put up a shower curtain, leave a few towels, and stock some toilet paper.  You will want a nice hot shower after a day of moving.
  • Arrange a pickup with your local charity organization for any items that you do not want to keep.  This is good if you are planning on filling your new home with new furniture!  This will save you from having to take the items and donate them yourself.
  • Sealable plastic bags work well for small parts like screws, tables, curtain rod hangers, etc.  Just make sure to label the bags with what item them go with!
  • Pack the items you need to be first off of the moving truck in a clear plastic tote; this will stand out next to the cardboard boxes.  Fill the tote with toilet paper, phone chargers, cutlery/plates, paper towels, tools like screwdrivers, and trash bags and other items that you will need right away at your new home.
  • Take a photo of how your electronics were connected, so you will remember the setup when you get to your new home.

Self Storage Storing Tips

StorPlace has self storage for all the seasons

Renting a storage unit and packing away your belongings can be a daunting task. Once you have packed the items that you want to store, follow the storage unit packing tips below to get more space out your storage unit.

  • Plan the layout before storing anything. If possible, leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit so you won’t have to move around as much when you need access. Put items in the front of the storage unit that you will need to frequently access. The back of the storage unit should be reserved for the least needed stuff. Make a diagram of where things are stored and tape it to the front wall; it will help you find what you are looking for.
  • Keep an inventory of your unit’s contents. Take digital photos and make a list of items before storing  or packing them,so you can remember what you have stored.
  • If you are storing items in cardboard boxes, tape the bottoms securely. Do not just fold the flaps on the bottom or the top of the boxes on themselves. Fill the boxes to the top, (use packing paper, if needed), before taping closed. Boxes that are not full can collapse when another box is placed on top of them. Stack the heaviest and largest boxes on the bottom with lighter boxes on top. Similar sized boxes will be easier to stack and are more stable.
  • Label all of the boxes. If a stored item is not identifiable by sight, indicated the room and description of the contents of the box on the outside. This should be written on all four sides of the box, so you can quickly identify the contents. If you put a label on the top of the box, the list can’t be seen if something is stacked on the box.
  • Maximize the vertical space in your unit. Sofas and mattresses can be stored vertically, so their footprint is smaller. Consider purchasing free-standing shelving units to stack boxes and other items within the storage unit. Select shelving units  that are deep enough for your needs. Also, choose storage units that are strong and are a good value, because no one will really see them.
  • Fill all empty spaces in other stored items such as appliances, dressers and shelving units. Place things inside of drawers and cabinets, such as cushions, clothing, stuffed animals, lamp shades and linens. Put boxes under and on the top of chairs and tables.
  • Disassemble large items like beds and remove legs from tables to save on space. Place any screws or hardware in a plastic bag and tape securely to the furniture.
  • Safeguard your items from damage and breakage. Place blankets between or around furniture to prevent scratches. Do not store mirrors or art lying flat, store them vertically within a special sized box or with protective packing material.
  • To protect your belongings from damage in humid conditions, leave some space between your stacks of boxes and the walls so air can circulate. Placing pallets on the floor will allow air to flow underneath and prevent the build-up of condensation. Rub a small amount of oil on anything metal like tools and bikes to help prevent rust. Use an old sheet to cover stored furniture or individual items to protect them from dust.
  • Check with your particular storage operator regarding what items that can not be stored in storage units.Under no circumstances should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit. Also, do not keep live plants or animals in a storage unit.

Summertime Storage Blues

Guys, if you are anything like my husband you already have the Summertime Storage Blues. Has she been on you as much as I have been on my husband to finish his HONEY DO LIST? Girls: talking, whining, bribing, and threatening will do no good. Now it’s time for a not so gentle nudge.  The first thing you need to do is to RENT A STORAGE SPACE for all of the extra things you want to get out of the house or garage.
Summer is a great time to complete those spring cleaning projects that didn’t get completed such as moving the items that you cleared out of rooms to a storage unit.

Summer brings different challenges when you are renting a storage unit. It is also the busiest season for storage facilities and moving companies!  Face it, summer is hot and sticky–not exactly the best time of year to cram your things into a small space! Fortunately, there are many ways to keep your belongings cool and dry while you store them in the sweaty summer months. Below are just a  few tips to keep in mind when you are storing this summer.

•Use a heated and cooled unit. If you will be storing clothing (especially leather or fur), wood furniture, photographs, or electronics, your safest option is to rent a heated and cooled unit. Extreme heat and high humidity that is typical of the summer months can cause mildew, mold, rust and decay. Heated and cooled storage will maintain a steady temperature between 60 and 80 degrees in the storage unit protecting your belongings.

•Make sure that everything is clean and dry before storing it. Storing damp items will contribute to the moisture in the air and cause damage to your belongings. Make sure all clothing is washed (and thoroughly dry) before storing as well. Dirt, oils, perfumes or stains on unclean clothing will attract pest infestations, especially in high temperatures.

•Make sure everything is adequately packed. Make sure all furniture and mattresses are wrapped and covered with furniture blankets, then covered with a plastic sheet to keep out moisture. Never place plastic directly against furniture as this can cause moisture build-up on the mattress. Clothing and furs should be cleaned before going into storage and hung inside wardrobe boxes. You should also place your possessions on top of wooden pallets if your unit has a concrete floor. This will keep them away from condensation.

Stop by any of the 16 Middle Tennessee and Bowling Green, KY StorPlace Self Storage locations to find out more about storage tips for the summer months. StorPlace Self Storage’s friendly and knowledgable staff are here to help you out with your all of your storage needs from moving and packing supplies to storage unit rentals.
