Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Business

A messy desk is a less productive desk. Spring clean up your act with these tips!

Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Business

Spring cleaning fever is spreading! People in the workplace can participate in the time-honored tradition, too. Of course, you won’t be sweeping, mopping or cleaning appliances. We’re going to clear out the clutter, organize your office and power up your productivity with these spring cleaning tips for your business.

How To Organize Your Office

Cleaning in the business place is more about organization than anything else. A lack of organization within your organization costs you time and money. Have we stressed the importance of organization?
Let’s start with your desk’s surface. Can you see it, or is it buried under a stack of papers and folders? Sift through that to see what’s no longer relevant. Toss that stuff right away. For the items that still need tending to, sort them by priority and stack them neatly in one spot on your desk.

Next, consider the arrangement of items on your desk. Most people in the modern workplace spend the majority of their day looking at a computer screen. Make sure yours is directly in front of you, and if possible, have the screen level with your eyes to reduce neck and back issues.

If you spend a lot of time on the phone, make sure it’s close at hand and easily visible. Position your most-used office supplies in a similar fashion. Items that see use everyday probably don’t need to go in a drawer. If your stapler, staple remover, tape dispenser or other items are only needed occasionally, keep them tucked away in a storage area or on a shelf.

Personal belongings like photos, awards and other mementos are a great way to spruce up the place, but don’t let them take over your workstation. If that action figure collection distracts you throughout the day, it shouldn’t stay.

Organizing Your Email Inbox

Now that your desktop is clean and well-organized, has your email inbox blown up? We have a few ideas on how to get that part of your work space under control, too.

This may sound counterintuitive, but check your inbox less often. Many of us are distracted when those email notifications pop up—just begging to be read. How many times have you been in the middle of an important project only to have your train of thought derailed by that intrusive little pop-up window? Did it take a while to get back on track? Was it worth it?

You might go so far as to turn the notifications off and designate a few times throughout the day that are reserved for checking messages. You can also reduce the amount of email flying back and forth with a few phone calls or in-person chats. It can difficult to convey context with written communication sometimes, and you might save everyone some time with a little more personal interaction. As an added bonus, they get to see your smiling face!

Storage For Your Business

As your business gets organized, you may find yourself with more stuff than you can adequately store on site. Some items could be donated to charities or raffled off to employees, but you might need to keep some of it. Where will you put it?

That’s where StorPlace can help. Our self-storage facilities offer security and convenience with storage units in a variety of sizes to fit your needs. Our friendly managers are willing to go the extra mile to make sure your storage experience is as stress-free as possible. They can answer any questions you might have about extra features like climate-controlled storage units, and they can offer guidance on the best ways to maximize the use of your space. Spring Cleaning Advice for Your Garage

Spring Cleaning Advice for Your Garage

For many Americans, the garage tends to be a holding area for all sorts of objects. Broken tools or appliances, future projects (that may or may not be completed) and a variety of other items can overwhelm the space if you’re not careful. Make sure your spring cleaning plan includes some quality time in the garage.A teenage boy helps clean the garage.

How to Clean the Garage

The following list is a good place to start, but you may want to take a few extra minutes to customize it to your situation. Work smarter, not harder!

  1. Start with a blank canvas. Before you can turn your garage into a carefully organized work of art, you have to clean it out. Move items to your patio, driveway or yard. Instead of shuffling things from side to side (and shuffling dirt and dust around with them), this will ensure that you’re able to wipe out all the dirt in one pass. It will also let you know just how much stuff has accumulated in your garage. You might be surprised at what you find!
  2. Dust, sweep and rinse. Dust off any unmovable surfaces like large shelving units, wall-mounted organization racks and anything else that’s stuck in there. Once the dust has settled, break out the broom and dustpan. Finish everything off with a mop and bucket or at least a good spray from the water hose. If you keep the floor clean out here, you’ll minimize the mess that follows the family’s feet into the house.
  3. Determine what stays and what goes. Anything that’s clearly unsalvageable should be tossed. If you have some broken items that you’ve been meaning to get around to repairing eventually, be honest with yourself about the likelihood of that day coming. Some items could be donated to local charities or taken to recycling centers. Sort through it all and decide what should have a place in your home.
  4. Get it together. Now that you’ve made the hard decisions, it’s time to get organized! Group items by themes so you can easily find them when you need them. You might need to get some shelving units or containers to keep everything nice and neat going forward. Once it’s all in place, try to maintain it! If you let little messes mount up, it gets easier and easier to delay the cleaning effort until you’re left with a big job—like today.

Beat The Heat

You have decided to move. A thousand things must be running through your mind right now. Where will we go? When will it be? How much is it going to cost? How long will it all take? I may not know the answer to any of those questions but what I do know is you have to start somewhere. Packing. The more organized and diligent you are about packing your things, the easier it will make your move.

When you sit back and think about packing your things, you need to put things into several different categories. The first divisions that need to be made are what things you will move with you, what things you will store and what things you will be getting rid of. This can be one of the hardest decisions that you have to make when you are moving, but given some time and thought it can make your process much easier. You don’t want to get to your new house and have a lot of clutter to go through; so doing it at the beginning stages can save you time and frustration. The next categories you would places things into would be by rooms.  This makes moving to the new place much easier because when you unload the moving truck you take the boxes straight to the room they belong in to wait to be unpacked. Make sure you make a list of what is in each box and number all of your boxes so you can keep track of what you have. No one likes losing things when they are moving, but if you have a reference of what you have and where it should be, you may save yourself some trouble.

The next major step you must take in your moving process is gathering boxes. First, assess how much you have to pack to save yourself from making multiple trips to buy boxes. The good thing about StorPlace Self Storage is that we not only offer services to your storage needs, but we also have a full line of moving and packing supplies. We can be your one stop shop for any and everything moving related. Now, you know you need boxes, but you walk in and there are different sizes. We understand can be a little overwhelming but if you keep these simple suggestions in mind you will be well equipped with the knowledge you need to leave the store with everything you will need. Smaller boxes are good for heavier items such as books and dishes. You do not want to load a larger box down with heavy items because it is harder to move and you risk obtaining an injury. Medium boxes are the perfect size for children’s toys and even some small kitchen appliances. Large boxes are best used for household items such as computer equipment and cookware. Extra Large boxes are perfect for bulky and lightweight items such as linens and pillows. There are even wardrobe boxes to place hanging clothes from closets in. Don’t forget to pick up some newsprint and bubble wrap to protect your most precious collectables from breaking. Now since you have picked out all of your boxes make sure you have enough tape to get them assembled and closed up completely. We also carry a lot of other moving supplies such as quilted blankets, mattress covers and tie down ropes.

So when you are in the first stages of moving, keep all of the tips in mind. And start your packing experience off right by making one stop to get everything you need at StorPlace of Old Hickory. You can find a full list of our moving and packing supplies on StorPlace.com
