If you gauge the season by the weather, it would be hard to believe that it is Christmastime. The temperatue at the time of writing this post on this early December morning is fifty-seven degrees. Okay, so the forecast calls for a cold front later this week. But for now, it seems like spring at StorPlace Self Storage of Bowling Green. Ironically, we have decorated the office and storefront a little earlier this year. The highest tenant traffic is normally around the first of the month when folks drop by to pay their storage rent. It is nice when a tenant can actually see the decorations we put up.
A tenant stopped in to pay that got us to thinking “internationally.” He was humming a Christmas carol and knew quite a bit about its history. He said that the Coventry Carol is one of the most recognizable and haunting pieces of music of the season. The carol dates from sixteenth-century England and is about King Herod and Bethlehem from the Gospel of Matthew. It is the tenant’s favorite Christmas carol. That’s why he knows so much about it. The carol was a perfect reminder that this time of year is not just about shopping and that Christmas is not an American invention. Of course, we knew that, but it is a good reminder. Best of all, the tenant liked our office Christmas decorations, which was the whole point of decking the halls.
Not too long after that visit, we received a call from a tenant who was checking on his storage account balance. He thought he had already paid December, but was mistaken. He said he would arrange for the payment but could not bring it in himself because he was in Saudi Arabia. This got us to thinking about many of the tenants we have that are currently out of the country: one lives in Toronto, another is stationed at a U.S. embassy in the Middle East and a few more are in the military or at universities overseas. While they can’t take their things with them, the belongings remain safe at StorPlace Self Storage of Bowling Green.
Yesterday, our store’s Operations Manager visited us from Nashville. While running an errand she came back with supplies and a few additional Christmas decorations. She noted that the candy canes were a product of Mexico, the string lights from the Philippines, and the window gels from China. StorPlace Self Storage is even more international than we realized! Come to think of it, StorPlace Self Storage’s staff Christmas dinner is held at an Italian restaurant. Wow!
Merry Christmas to you, Feliz Navidad, or whatever language you happen to speak!
